As part of our one of the main objectives, “To promote health and human security including development of legal framework and supporting the vulnerable groups with gender as cross cutting theme”, we have undertaken a base line survey on the Human Trafficking issues among Muslim Communities in Mae Sot, Thailand.
Greater Mekong Sub- region (GMS) Mae Sot, town in Tak, has been targeted as a place to work of Burmese migrants and one of the biggest centers of human trafficking in Thailand. The worst impact of child trafficking caused children to get back in the community after their human organs like kidney being taken off and sold out. Our study in April 2007 reveals that children are being a regular subject of trafficking from Muslim communities. Recently on 22 February 2007, ten kids were trafficked. Most victims are abducted from their communities or sold to traffickers by family members. Poverty is a major cause of trafficking of children. The trafficking of children for various forms of exploitation, including commercial sexual exploitation is a worst form of human rights violation and threat to human security which is a burring reality in Muslim community in Mae Sot. There exists at least 1,000 kids of poor Muslim community are highly vulnerable target group of trafficking.
Besides adult male trafficking from South Asia to South East Asia, male Muslim adult trafficking is a new emerging phenomenon in Mae Sot. As a part of the cross coastal trafficking a number 200 Arakani as well as Bangla speaking male are being trapped in Mae Sot. These people took a dangerous fishing boat voyage across the coasts of for getting a better job opportunity of life. They do not have any shelter for sleeping and medical care support. These groups are most vulnerable and could be mislead by any point.
